Beyond Swings: Incorporating Kettlebells in the Rehabilitation Process
Though kettlebells have been a resistance training tool used for centuries, their popularity in the last few decades has grown considerably with the advent of numerous functional training and conditioning programs. While primarily used to perform exercises in a ballistic fashion, kettlebells can also be used to develop mobility, strength, and multiplanar stability in a wide variety of exercises. As such, kettlebells can be versatile rehabilitation tools that are able to be used effectively across multiple patient populations and settings. This one-day preconference course will take an in-depth approach to the application of kettlebells in the rehabilitation and return-to-sport process. Attendees will receive detailed instruction in appropriate performance of several of the most effective kettlebell exercises available, as well as how to appropriately teach them to patients. The speakers also will teach progressions and regressions, as well as several variations for each exercise.

Outcomes and Advances in Prosthetic Rehabilitation for People With Limb Loss
Over the past 2 decades rehabilitation for people with limb loss has accelerated at a rapid pace, as a result of government-funded research and the care of our returning wounded warriors. Surgical procedures have introduced osseointegration and targeted muscle reinnervation. Postsurgical amputation care has become more aggressive. Prosthetic rehabilitation is now focused on restoration to the highest possible degree, with sports prosthetics becoming more common for people of all ages. As a result, comparative effectiveness research has become increasingly important to provide clinicians, consumers, payers, and other stakeholders with data to promote informed decision making. The need to objectively demonstrate outcomes is no longer an option, but rather a requirement. Evidence-based health care is driving the future of every discipline within the field of rehabilitation, and those who are employing outcomes properly will likely be tomorrow’s leaders of the profession. The presenters will outline, quantify, and discuss treatments and exercise programs based on the most current research along with other evidence that supports or refutes current interventions within the field of physical therapy, prosthetics, and rehabilitation medicine. Attendees will learn about the current trends in lower limb amputation surgery and what interventions should be applied postoperatively, how technology can assist with prosthetic rehabilitation, which evidence-based outcome measures are appropriate for amputee rehabilitation. They also will learn about resources to assist people with lower limb loss return to sport and recreational activities. The speakers will discuss and demonstrate evidence-based rehabilitation programs and training techniques that can be used in the clinic.
